As children, we have a stronger connection to our authentic self but over time the world pulls us away. “Artemis” pays homage to the natural state of wonder that we are born with that is slowly lost over time. It was inspired by a dream in which I experienced life as a bear who was captivated by a bee landing on a flower. As I gazed intently at the flower, I became aware of the dream state and was able to enjoy the purity of animal consciousness with the knowledge of human awareness. It gave a glimpse into the potential for a return to a more natural state of being without becoming helpless or naïve. Bears symbolize power, inner strength, freedom of thought, and independence. The name “Arthur” has roots in both Latin and Welsh which means “bear-like man”. Bears were highly revered by the Greek goddess Artemis and her name is believed to mean” bear-sanctuary”. It is the only portrait where the left eye is not damaged or obscured.
